Public Banking: Creating Jobs, Building Communities
February 11, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
FreeAlliance for Local Economic Prosperity is the think tank for a New Mexico Public Bank. Volunteers Sarah Manning, Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar, and Melissa Pickett join us to discuss the advantages of public banking. A public bank is owned by the people through their representative government: a Tribe, City, County, State or Federal Government. It can receive deposits of public funds (taxes, fees, fines and interest earned) to make loans to business and fund infrastructure projects. Public Banks take our money out of Wall Street to keep our funds safe, local, and working. They do not compete with small credit unions and community banks, but back them up and give them access to credit that they find difficult to access in our Wall-Street-dominated current system.
